Moonbow!  Images from tonight’s Super Moon Lunar Eclipse

Today’s Super Moon Lunar Eclipse marked the first time the moon was not in its perfect roundness on the day of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival in my entire life.  It was disorienting: first the moon disappeared in the sky, then slowly a sliver of it showed up.  I can see now why my Chinese ancestors of many moons ago set off firecrackers to chase away evil spirits that were believed to be devouring our moon during a lunar eclipse.

After what seemed like forever, the moon poked out.  Finally, all was right with the world when the moon resumed its perfect roundness:

Then… THIS happened:

MOONBOW!

My iPhone5-captured pictures cannot do this magnificent phenomenon justice.  When I saw this eye-blinding rainbow-filled sky hanging above me, I squealed and woke little Plum up to watch this.  Monkey King bloomed, “That’s Moonbow!”  I thought he was just making up the word.  Nope, moonbow does exist! And it was perfection.

Motherhood Chronicle: Separation Anxiety, Mine

IMG_0260

Today marked the day Plumster went to her school without asking me for a goodbye kiss.  Not even a goodbye hug.  She just got in line, raised her little face toward me, and smiled her goofy smile.  Other kids gathered around her and they chatted.  I stood there watching her, unsure of what to do next.

This reminded me of the tail end of her breastfeeding days.  Every time I nursed her I wondered if it’d be the last time she wanted to nurse.  At the end, with residency training, everything was a blur.  Perhaps that was a good thing.  Now I can’t even remember the very last time she nursed and how we eventually stopped.  This time around, I want to commemorate this milestone moment.  Or shall I say, this little heart break of a motherhood moment.

IMG_0221

Motherhood is full of uncertainty, anxiety and most of all, this unremitting sense of selflessness.  This abundance of selfless love for another creature that you never knew existed within you.  This creature whom you nourish with your own blood and soul for nine months inside your womb, and later, with your milk and heart in your arms.  Sometimes you think you might break, from all the time and energy and attention that is required of you.  But miraculously you don’t.  You become stronger both mentally and physically.  All of a sudden you can stay up hours on end; lift heavy weights such as a stroller with a growing baby inside, up flights of stairs; make meals in a flash; research and cross-reference for the multitude of little-people-items that we seem to need to raise a child these days; and somehow with all the chaos around you, remain calm with a smiling face when all you want to do is to throw up your hands and scream, “Mommy needs a break.”

Somehow miraculously, you just expand.

IMG_9360

You expand your tolerance, your patience, you love.  Because of this little person, you become more capable.  Your repertoire of songs and funny voices expand as well.  But watch out!  While you are busy being the kind of mother that you envision yourself to be, they grow up.  While you are busy planning the next phase, they grow up right under your nose.  Step by step, they grow up.  First they let go of your bosom, then your goodbye kisses and hugs.  I hate to fathom what will they give away next?!

Thankfully Plum is still not sleep-trained yet.  I know there is a fine reason in my madness.  She still needs me to fall asleep.  I think I am going to hold on to that a little while longer.

Being A Pedestrian In LA: Auto-Monki

SCAN0086

I stopped by the library after work to borrow a couple of books for Plum.  There was no parking by the library, so I parked a few streets down and walked.

When I came out of the library, I automatically walked to the street to wait for the red light to change, right behind a car.  A car pulled up behind me.  It took me a few seconds to register that perhaps as a pedestrian, I would probably be better off waiting for the light change on the sidewalk.  And far better still to cross the street on the crosswalk instead of among these cars, during rush hour.

It’s been a long day for this Angeleno!

One Hundred Push-Ups

pushup

How does it feel to have done one hundred push-ups?  Well, that question has never crossed my mind until this morning, after I have actually done one hundred push-ups last night in my martial arts class.

Doing push-ups has never been appealing to me, let alone doing a lot of them.  In fact, I couldn’t really believe that it was happening while I was doing it.

Four and a half years ago, when I started my martial arts training, I could barely do five half push-ups, also known as “lady push-ups”, where you kneel on your knees thus decrease the amount of weight you have to push up.  Two years ago, my Master declared that half push-ups were not allowed in his school.  I started doing full push-ups: I started with two, and gradually increased to ten.  My comfort level was two sets of ten as of last week.

During class last night, while we were in the midst of one hundred sit-ups, the Master said, “Next, I want everyone to do one hundred push-ups.”  I think it was my audible gulp which prompted him to say to me, “you just have to do fifty.”  I couldn’t reply in words because I was too busy surviving my one hundred sit-ups.  Another student, a man, jokingly said, “she is not saying anything because she wants to do two hundred.” Being the only female in the class, I felt the need to redeem my gender.

I used the mental trick that my husband taught me.  When you count up to 10, you say “one”; then start from one again and when you get to twenty, you say “two”.  That way it doesn’t feel like you are doing a lot.  When I got up to “five”, I looked around me, the men were grunting through just like I was!  Can I do ten more?  Sure if the men were still working; so I went up to “six”; then twenty more to “eight”.  I thought to myself, I can do twenty more, can’t I?  It was like at the 20th mile during a marathon, where you say to yourself, I can do another six miler, can’t I?

The hardest was at 97.  During the last three full push-ups, my arms felt like lead and I could hardly bend at the elbow.  I lifted one leg to do one more, then switched legs to do another one.  I don’t know why I did that, maybe variation made it easier.  The last one was all will power.  The need to complete a task, to go to a round number.

“I was impressed!” said my Master.  “I was shocked!” I replied.

So how does it feel to have done one hundred push-ups?  This morning I held a large coffee in my hand and wished I had ordered a smaller cup because the cup would’ve been lighter for me to carry.  But what I can carry high is my head in my next martial arts class.  Just because I am a girl doesn’t mean that I should be expected to do less.

A Birthday Wish

Nicholson Baker has an extraordinary gift of observation and powerful attention to detail.  In his “A Box of Matches“, written in his characteristic stream-of-consciousness style, the narrator wakes up everyday to make coffee, make a fire, meditate, before the sunrise.  This habit evolved after his wife took him to watch the sunrise on his birthday.

When asked what I wanted for my birthday, I told my family that I wanted us to watch the sunrise together.  Lo and behold, on the day of my birthday this year, Monkey King woke me up with “Happy Birthday” at 5:45am.  He made me a thermos of green tea.  We bundled up little Lady Monkey and arrived at a nearby park at 6:10am.

The sky was overcast.  We walked around the park, feeling disappointed.  Then as if on cue exactly at 6:13am, I looked up and there it was, this magnificent golden globe peeking through the clouds to wish me a Happy Birthday!  I ran towards the sun and squealed.  The sunrise lasted all but a minute.  After this precious moment, the sun rose up to the cloud above, and was hidden from view again.

My family gathered around me.  I felt happy.

Restaurant Review: Sweetfin Poké

Summer is coming to an end.  Over the summer break, I managed to spend a lot of wonderful, quality time with little Plumster on a daily basis because I decided early on to pick Plum up from her summer camp without her having to stay for extended care.  I figured if she can’t go on long family summer vacations because of our works, at least she got to spend few extra hours with Mama.  As such, my work days were cramped pretty tight and I was left exhausted toward the tail end of the summer.  In the name of self preservation, I decided to take a day off from work and spend some quality time with myself.

For lunch, I chose a place I’ve been meaning to try called Sweetfin Poké.  Poké is an Hawaiian cuisine.  Modern Poké usually involves cubed raw fish marinated in soy sauce, seasalt, and sesame oil.  As I walked in, I immediately liked the place.  The interior was airy and full of light.  The furniture was substantial, whimsical and comfortable.  There were limited indoor and outdoor seating options due to its small square footage, but Sweetfin Poké was designed to be a grab-and-go eatery to begin with.  The pleasing modern interior design was a bonus.

One can order signature bowls such as tuna with classic sesame-soy sauce, white and green onions, sesame seeds and red chile; mango-albacore with ponzu-lime sauce, macadamia nuts and ginger; Sriracha tuna with hijiki and avocado; spicy yuzu salmon with edamame and lime.   One can also BYOB (Build Your Own Bowl) and customize the bowls with one’s choice of base: bamboo rice, kelp noodle and cucumber slaw, citrus kale salad; sauce: creamy togarashi, yuzu koshu, ponzu lime, sriracha ponzu; protein: albacore, tuna, yellowfin tuna, salmon, snapper, and for vegetarians: tofu or chopped vegetables; and tons of add-on options to top this refreshing deliciousness.

I ordered a small BYOB: kelp noodle with cucumber slaw, albacore with Sriracha ponzu, topped with avocado, carrots, cilantro, bean sprouts.  Drink options included unsweatened fruit infused iced tea and coconut water.  The bowl was fresh, decadent, tasty.  There were many other add-on choices such as mango, chile marinated oranges, seaweed salad, edamame, pickled ginger, wasabi-toasted coconut flakes, just to name a few.

After a day of quiet thinking, I ended the day feeling more like myself again.  Will I come back to Sweetfin Poke?  Oh yeah!  I am already dreaming about what to add onto my next healthy, delicious bowl!

Worry Worm and Her Sun

IonringBlackhole

Conversation overheard this morning while I was running out the door to get to work:

Plum: Daddy!  Is the Earth going to become a Black Hole one day?

MK: No, I don’t think so.  I don’t think the mass of the Earth is big enough.  Maybe the sun.  Yeah, the sun might turn into a Black Hole one day.

Plumster has been expressing her anxiety about all sorts of natural disasters: earthquake, drought, tsunami, tornado, avalanche, you name it.  Great, now she has to worry about the SUN turning into a Black Hole.   She ruminated over this new information.  Then…

Plum: Daddy!  Are you familiar with the Big Bang theory?

MK: Yes.

Plum, now even more animated: At first, there was a big mess of everything…

Whoa!  Nothing like discussing Black Holes and Big Bangs for a worry worm to jump-start her day.

EATS: Weeknight Ginger Lemon Sea Bass

Sea bass has a buttery, flaky and firm texture.  Combined with its mild flavor, sea bass fillet lends itself to a nice marinate.  Monkey King and I have a weekly “date night dinner” at home where we eat at a leisurely pace after Plumster goes to bed.  I came up with this recipe the night before while rummaging through the fridge, as the key to a leisurely paced dinner required a bit of advanced planning.  The prep time took less than 15 minutes, and cooking time took less than 15 minutes.  Here is the recipe:

EATS: Ginger Lemon Sea Bass

Makes 2 servings

 Ingredients:

For the marinate:

  •  2 sea bass fillet
  •  2 Tsp Mirin rice cooking wine
  •  1 Tsp low sodium soy sauce
  •  Drizzle of sesame oil
  •  6 slices of fresh ginger,  julienned (the more finely chopped, the more ginger flavor)
  • 3 cloves of garlic, crushed (ditto)
  • 1/2 lemon worth of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 slices of lemon
  • 1 Tsp lemon zest

For the garnish/sauce:

  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 3 scallions, sliced

 Steps:

  •  Mix all the marinate ingredients in a glass container
  • Place the sea bass fillet in the marinate, and make sure to cover the fillets for more than 6 hours or overnight

  • Take out the chilled, marinated, sea bass and let sit on the kitchen counter for 10 minutes to bring up the temperature.  I use this time to prep the side dishes
  • Heat 1 Tsp of olive oil in the pan in medium heat and sprinkle atop the oil  with some salt to prevent the fish from sticking to the pan
  •  Sear the fish on both sides, approximately 40 seconds each side
  •  Once the second side is seared, add 1 Tsp of mirin rice cooking wine or chicken broth, turn down the heat to medium low, and place the lid to cover the pan

  • Let the fish simmer in the covered pan for about 1 minutes, until done
  • Transfer the fish to a plate

  • Deglaze the pan with the marinate liquid.  While bubbling, stir fry in the rest of the (non-liquid) marinate, 3 cloves of minced garlic and sliced scallions

I made a side of sautéed Swiss Char with garlic, jelapeño, and a dash of fish sauce.  You may want to pair this dish with a nicely chilled glass of sauvignon blanc or with a Belgium blonde such as Delirium Tremens.  This is a quick, healthy, and simple dish to enjoy on a busy weeknight.  Bon appétit!
